Maria was the third of three children adopted from China by the Chapman family. The Chapman family had just returned from China “for several concerts and to see the progress of the Shaohannah’s Hope Healing Home.”
Over the past few days I have had three main thoughts from this tragedy.
- Steven Curtis Chapman is a man of incredible character. From reading his lyrics to hearing his words to seeing his lifestyle he has always impressed me with his love, humility, faithfulness, humor and joy. This video of him washing dishes with his daughter reveals some of that.
- Tragedies seem to happen to those who are faithful, the more faithful, the more tragic. Pastor David Wilkerson of Times Square Church often spoke about this. This obviously goes against the prosperity gospel.
- I am considering adoption. Steven Curtis and Mary Beth Chapman started a foundation, Shaohannah’s Hope, whose mission is “mobilizing the body of Christ to care for orphans.”
The Bible says God works in all things for the good of those who love him, Romans 8:28. If the tragedy of Maria Sue Chapman motivates some of us in the body of Christ to care for orphans then something good has been done. Now I just need to find out more about adoption.
Here is a video of “When Loves Takes You In” which Steven Curtis Chapman wrote for his three adopted children. I believe Maria Sue Chapman is featured in this video.
An example of his love and humility is found in the song “Cinderella”. According to his website, the song “Cinderella” was “inspired by a night where he wasn’t such a good dad.” If you watch the video on the Cinderella page you will see at the end of the video Steven Curtis Chapman explain why he wrote the song.
Here is a part of the lyrics to the song.
Well, she came home today
With a ring on her hand
Just glowin’ and tellin’ us all they had planned
She says “Dad, the wedding’s due six months away
And I need to practice my dancin'”
“Oh please, daddy please!”
So I will dance with Cinderella
While she is here in my arms
‘Cause I know something the prince never knew
Ohh-oh ohh-oh, I will dance with Cinderella
I don’t wanna miss even one song,
(even one song)
Cuz all too soon the clock will strike midnight
And she’ll be gone
And here is SCC performing the song at a concert in Des Moines, Iowa.
