This month an 11 year old boy died when the cave he was exploring at Natural Bridges State Beach in Santa Cruz collapsed. This paragraph from a San Jose Mercury News article about the tragedy really struck me.

The footprints of the adults who dug for the boys are still there, a semaphore of desperation. Witnesses say Pippin’s father kept feeling his son’s protruding arm for signs of life as they dug.

This tragedy bothers me because when I picture myself in that situation I realize I too would have let my boys play in that cave, especially after reading today that the cave was six feet deep and had been there for weeks.  I can only hope in the future I will be more vigilant as I better understand the possible dangers in our environment.
