Koreans love their toilets

 | May 2, 2008 10:46 AM

I saw this on the dooce blog, To replace the other song you had stuck in your head | dooce ®.

I arrived at this blog after learning about the term “dooced” from one of my friends.

“Dooced”

In 2002, Armstrong ignited a fierce debate about privacy issues when she was fired from her job as a web designer and graphic artist because she had written satirical accounts of her experiences at a dot-com startup on her weblog, dooce.com [1]. She did not challenge her termination and has refrained from identifying her place of employment in interviews.

Armstrong warns her fellow bloggers:

I started this website in February 2001. A year later I was fired from my job for this website because I had written stories that included people in my workplace. My advice to you is BE YE NOT SO STUPID.

Today in the daily report from our manager we were asked “On average, how far will the average office chair with wheels travel this year?” I treated it like an interview question and tried to figure it out before I looked up the answer at the end of the report.

  1. Assume you move your chair every fifteen minutes 1 meter.
  2. In one day you would move 32 meters. I rounded up to 50 meters to make the calculations easy.
  3. In a month you’d move about 1000 meters. In a year you’d move about 12000 meters or 12 kilometers or 7.5 miles.

And the actual answer is:

According to a recent study by the office furniture industry, the average office chair with wheels will travel 8 miles in any given year.

Too bad in real interviews these kind of questions usually leave me stumped.

Honey, will you marry… Oh. Never mind…

Hajji, of Hackney, east London, had concealed a $12,000 engagement ring inside a helium balloon. The idea was that she would pop the balloon as he popped the question.

But as he left the shop, a gust of wind pulled the balloon from his hand and he watched the ring — and quite possibly the affections of his girlfriend — sailing away over the rooftops.

How To Get Off A Mailing List

 | February 26, 2008 7:50 PM

There is now a free service to get off mailing lists.  It’s actually run by the Direct Marketing Association so they actually try to discourage you from using it.  Anyway I used it and registered my name along with Ji Seon’s, Dylan’s and my sister and brother-in-law who also still get junk mail at my address.

Secret Asian Man and Corea

 | February 19, 2008 12:12 PM

I have been really enjoying this comic strip, Secret Asian Man. We’re fortunate that it is featured in the San Jose Mercury News. Too bad it is not in many other newspapers.

Here is a nice Japanese Korean reconciliation strip from 2/17/08.

Here is another one that I thought was funny from 2/13/08.

Tigers in the News

Bengal TigerI think it’s pretty brave to give mouth to mouth to a tiger, even if it’s a cub. :-)

Student’s mouth-to-muzzle saves tiger cub

In other news a tiger killed a patron at the San Francisco Zoo and was shot afterwards by police. Later it was reported the patrons were drunk and were antagonizing and berating the tiger but that may have been a lie. Recent articles have been questioning how San Francisco Zoo is run. I think it’s sad that the tiger was killed instead of tranquilized. In general I think most zoos are inhumane, caging animals just for peoples’ entertainment. Exceptions are such excellent zoos as San Diego Zoo and Toronto Zoo.

“Pet” girl kicked off bus

 | January 25, 2008 8:46 PM

I told someone about this story and he said maybe we as Christians are like this “pet” girl. We just want God to lead us around and tell us what to do, we don’t want to make decisions and we don’t want to take responsibility. My reaction to this story was I thought it was kind of sad but I am not that deep.

“Pet” girl kicked off bus

LONDON (Reuters) – A British bus company has apologized to a girl who is led around on a leash by her boyfriend and describes herself as a human pet after one of its drivers threw her off a bus.

Tasha Maltby, 19, told British newspapers she was the “pet” of her 25-year-old fiance Dani Graves.

….

“I am a pet,” she told the Daily Mail. “I generally act animal-like and I lead a really easy life. I don’t cook or clean and I don’t go anywhere without Dani. It might seem strange but it makes us both happy. It’s my culture and my choice. It isn’t hurting anyone.”
