I was stunned when the Red Sox came back to win Game 5 and was thinking that maybe both my predictions would be wrong. Watching Game 7 I thought the Red Sox were coming to come back again. I was begging Maddon to bring in Kazmir or Jackson or Price. When Price got the final out I was elated.

The Phillies destroyed the Dodgers and were impressive. However I am still going to predict Tampa Bay in six, with the Phillies winning the games that Hamels starts. Tampa Bay’s pitching is deeper and I always pick the AL team.  Tampa Bay in 6.

By the way, remember when the Phillies lost to the Blue Jays in the 1993 World Series. Remember seeing Curt Schilling with the towel on his head? Remember Game 4 which the Jays won 15 – 14?  And of course Joe Carter winning it with his home run.  And Pat Gillick was the GM of that Blue Jays team.

Here is a strange photo from the Red Sox victory.  First it looks like Dustin Pedroia has been photoshopped over Lyle Overbay.  Second it is amusing that Dustin Pedroia is laughing at Lyle Overbay but not surprising considering what I read in this ESPN the Magazine article, 170 Pounds of Mouth.  Dustin is probably laughing because he knows that Lyle Overbay is safe as replays showed.

As my friend Alan says, this is the “golden age of sports” for Boston.

Having lived in Boston for almost twenty years and being a sports fan I feel like I have gotten a pretty good read of the Boston sports scene. And honestly, though I am happy for the fans I would say that in general the Boston sports scene is a bit too “fantastic”.

Boston sports fan take their sports incredibly seriously.

Benefits:

• raucous, sometimes entertaining sports radio
• excellent local sports journalism
• loud and enthusiastic sports crowds

Handicaps

• fans are rarely satisfied
• emotions run incredibly high
• demands create an almost poisonous atmosphere

I have seen all the major sports teams in Boston and I think the Red Sox fans are the worst  I remember being shocked at my first game at Fenway Park with how fans acted. They were literally angry if the Red Sox were losing. I must admit I have not gone since their 2004 championship, maybe they have lightened up.

In contrast here in Silicon Valley, California people enjoy their sports but they don’t really care.  The sports scene really is the opposite of Boston’s but I prefer it.  I think it’s healthier, sports is just a game.  Unfortunately sports radio here is so boring.
